Guest guest
Hiya Ken, have any stats on suicide on kids ON psychotropics? I thought I read somewhere that 6 of 10,000 adolescents on meds (ages15-19) will commit suicide. Anyone have actual numbers on this? This would be an interesting note. I have to find the article I was looking at a few days ago. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, Certainly those who are prescribing these drugs will say that the underlying condition caused the behavior to cover their butts. But, whatever the case, it is clear these drugs have suicidal ideation as a side effect. Re: RE protesting The New England Journal of medicine. I don't think that any stats concerning SSRI caused suicidality will be accurate, because my personal experience was that when I was rescued from my suicide, my meds were increased, I was convinced by doctors that the suicide and all the other adverse reactions were the reason I was prescribed the meds. Vicious circle when you get trapped in it, thing is I never ever felt better on those drugs, and not until years later did I realize that the personality that those meds manufactured was not in my nature. I was told by the doctors that I was at fault, I was made to feel guilty and flawed. These drugs also created an insatiable craving for liquor in addition to the craving to end my life. I wonder if the same brain mechanisms are involved there. But I didn't enjoy this at all, I wasn't akin to a drug addict seeking a high, I wanted to stop, but was told I would be committed if need be, and the drugs would be administered intravenously. Guest guest
So much of what I have been reading is that suicide risks occur most frequently in " mood disorders' of the mixed variety, ie MDD, hypomania, anxiety, etc Also with other problems such as drug and alcohol abuse, victims of rape and incest, violence, eating disorders, etc THESE ARE SOCIAL ILLS. It also seems that drug therapy seems to be the first line of treatment and that they are quickly prescribed by practitioners unqualified to diagnosis, and that minimal followup or patient instruction is given. Its known that most antidepressants, especiallly the SSRI's have an increased risk of suicidal ideation in those with an anxiety disorder, yet so many with these " diagnosis; " are prescribed these drugs so freely. Some studies I have seen suggest a 4% risk of suicide with drug therapies, while 2% on placebo's. Another study I saw suggested that 6 of 10,000 on ssri's will have a serious attempt. Howveer, studies point to so many other factors. I " ll keep researching this. Obviously lacking are any clear cut answers. FOR ANY OF IT. It seems that the studies contradicts themselves, and they all suggest ongoing studies. WITH WHOM? Not my child. Anyways, thanks all for your ongoing committment. And, Happy New Year!! Guest guest
Can you believe that this STUPID article is now on schizophrenia.com's main page? How ridiculous is that? And they let someone slander me, left the post up, but deleted my response. I swear the people running that site are fascists. Guest guest
Yeah, I've just decided not to visit the site anymore. I just feel so terrible for all of the people who have so few places to turn and end up there, with no balanced outlook on their situation. Thanks for the perspective, Merrie. Hope that you had a wonderful holiday!! Guest guest
Thanks Merrie, Didn't know that one. Like it. So, so true:-) Steph > >> > >>> yeah, I quit three days before thanksgiving a year ago, but I was having > >>> > >> such a hard time I took some Zolft around the first part of April, only two or three days, what a mistake, I wanted to rip my head off and dribble it across a basketball court, so now it's been just over a year, except for those couple days, I'm doing way better,,, Sandy > >> >
Guest guest
Keep in mind that it's not my own quote, as much as I'd like to claim it. It's a great one, but it belongs to the Darwin Award site. Merrie > Thanks Merrie, > Didn't know that one. Guest guest
Sandy, If you want your rights stomped on go see a psychiatrist, if you want your soul buried under chemicals go see a psychiatrist. If you think that in a drug induced state you are safe with psychiatrists that's when they will give you brain damaging electroshock to finish you off. I know there are good psychiatrists out there and I know there are bad GPs out there but I have done quite well for myself SINCE I quit going anywhere near psychiatrists (early 80's). I have my ups and downs, the downs are as aweful as ever but when it's over I'm not damaged and I can feel that old good feeling again. Jim I'm not a medical professional, and I didn't bring a tape recorder with me, but that is what was implied, that was the impression the medical professionals gave me, I must have misinterpreted the words they used, but what was made perfectly clear was that I would be very sorry if I disobeyed them. I have a huge aversion to needles, when I had to have the blood drawn for tests it was a big production due to the fact that I'm such a wimp, perhaps that was played upon to get their point across,,, Sandy Re: RE protesting The New England Journal of medicine.
