As I understand it WB is not an SSRI nor a SSNRI. Only it works on the Dopamine in your brain.

So seeming well in the beginning, meaning what?

Thanks

PS Yes, many people have to literally count out the beads in their Effexor to get off. That stuff should be pulled off the market. I feel lucky it only lasted two weeks.

I am so sorry about your story. Yes, the wd is horrible. I have heard that with Effexor you have to literally take shavings off of your dose and wean down that slowly or the side effects are awful. I am glad it only took you 2 weeks, however you will have to be careful about the Wellbutrin as well. It all seems well in the beginning.

HiI am new to this group. I am 41 years old, and was placed on Effexor XR in January of 2007. At this time, I was in the hospital and had no experience with anti-depressents. Nor did I even know what they were giving me. I never asked, and they never disclosed it.I was also placed on Seroquel.I was started at 37.5, the normal dosing of FXR, and then bumped to 75 mg. I have to say that I did feel much better. Then I noticed I was putting on weight. And lots of it. I was about 128 pounds and I now weigh 156. I am only 5'3".I didn't change my eating habits, so can anyone tell me WHY I gained all this weight? Was there something in the medication that slowed my metabolism down? Then I started reading about FXR and getting off of it. I had decided back in March of this year, I wanted off. I was tired of gaining weight, and the sexual side effects were not pleasant either.Well, after reading the horrific stories of FXR WD, I got scared and just stayed on it. I discontinued my Seroquel, and that was no problem. I was placed on Buspar, and that was working fine for me. I have more anxiety then depression. So, again last month I had enough. Bad WD symptoms or not, I figured if it was that bad to detox from, then in must be bad in my system. Two weeks ago, I was tapered to 37.5, and placed on 200 mg of Wellbutrin. I didn't have any problems at all. I figured I was in the clear. I was wrong.Once I stopped the FXR altogether, it got bad. Brain Zaps, very, very dizzy, nausea, sweating, ears ringing. Awful.I ended up taking Bonine(like a Dramamine) to help with the dizziness. OMG it was awful. It has now been two weeks, and just now I am feeling like I am almost done with the WD symptoms. For anyone on FXR, you need to get OFF.I am on Wellbutrin now. I need to take this weight off.Do you think that by stopping the FXR, my metabolism will change and I can get this extra weight off?And I just wanted to share my experience with getting off of FXR. DO not listen to your Dr's. Do not take this stuff unless it is of dire emergency.

I must have missed this post to Jen. What "significance" and "Warned you about" are you referring to?? I am curious, as we want to encourage her, not discourage her.

I am living FXR W/D now, so I am curious about that statement.

Thanks!

Have you checked out the Withdrawal & Recovery group?

Do you understand the significance of what I warned you about in relation to Efexor's very short half life?

Hi ,

I am in the process of weaning of effexor, Im currently taking one 37.5mg tablet

every three days, today is my third day and Im going to try to stop, Im already

feeling sick, very low and tearful and the brain zaps are starting, is it going

to get worse? and like you said -is it all over in 2 weeks or do you still get

the odd thing?

Im convincing myself that two weeks isnt that long!! even though I bet it feels

like a life time when withdrawing.

I would love to hear from you cos no-one seems to understand unless you have

been through it yourself.

Thanks

Thanks

I am so sorry about your story. Yes, the wd is horrible. I have heard that with Effexor you have to literally take shavings off of your dose and wean down that slowly or the side effects are awful. I am glad it only took you 2 weeks, however you will have to be careful about the Wellbutrin as well. It all seems well in the beginning.

Have you checked out the Withdrawal & Recovery group?

Do you understand the significance of what I warned you about in relation to Efexor's very short half life?

Hi Kathy

Thanks for clarifying that. I know FXR effects people in very different ways. I know of one person who has permanent facial nerve damage from FXR.

And some, no problems. I am still experiencing the dizziness and brain zaps, but with Bonine they subside. Yes, it will be two weeks on Thursday.

I just keep saying that it will get better at some point, But nobody has that answer as to when.

I am sorry I was not clear about that statement. What I was trying to say is that I agree with the lady who experienced the problem that at first, for the first few weeks, many people feel great. Everything seems really good. Then, without warning, they begin to feel the side effects. For me, it was great at first, until I lost my perscription and missed one of my doses. I felt like a junkie. Tore my house apart looking for the bottle. Luckily, I found it but I realized that the effects were unbelievable. I just wanted her to know that it is true that in the beginning, many times, it seems like all is great.

I would like to clarify metabolic syndrome before anyone here panics. This is a syndrome. That is all it is. Metabolic syndrome is very difficult to diagnose, as there are certain factors that come into play. You may have all 4 risk factors, but still do not have metabolic syndrome.

Seroquel does raise blood sugar, and can cause diabetes. Fasting blood sugars and total cholesterols should be checked, a minimum of once a year, preferably every 6 months when you first begin..

Changing your eating habits, diet and exercise is the only way to conquer a metabolic problem, if in fact, that is what it is.

You do need to be pro-active while taking any medication. Not just AD. All meds have side effects, and you as the patient should take charge of you health, read, read, and do more reading, so you are educated and informed.

It should be the Dr's responsibility, but in this day and age, that is not going to happen .

In terms of the wieght -you might want to look at metobolic syndrome - there is some discussion about meds creating this-serequel was the one most targeted in the current lawsuits for causing weight gain and diabetes, but they were all implicated.

Have your thyroid checked and rechecked. Check your temperature UNDER your arm with a basal thermometer every morning for a month BEFORE you get out of bed. Track it and a list of your symptoms.

Have your liver tested. You know what has happened to you, but without tests you will never have the proof you need to get the heart of the issues resolved or even know for certain what it is you need to work on or the best way to go about that. My dr.s all said there was nothing wrong with me. I went to an alternative worker and had live blood analysis, salvia and unrine tests and they showed, heart, liver and kidney damage and I was only on prozac for 6 weeks and ended up in a coma. I plan to do chelation therapy to detox but ONLY after I am strong enough. If you are not strong enough to detox, it can take you to your knees and make you very very sick. You need to find someone competent to work this through with.
