Guest guest
To register your displeasure with the overmedicalization and the investigation of more pyschiatric drugs for children, PLEASE WRITE the president of Emory University an email at wagner@... The following is an example of an email that you can send: Dear Dr. Wagner: It has come to my attention that Emory University has recently endowed a chair in child psychiatry at the university of medicine. I am disappointed that children are being viewed through an illness centred model that serves to medicalize childhood and results in the overprescription of psychiatric drugs for the precious children of our nation. I humbly request that you reconsider this initiative based on the overwhelming premise of child psychiatry, which is to classify exuberance and noncomformist childhood behaviours as deviant. You may wish to read Dr. Breeding's book, Wildest Colts, to get a better understanding of my position. Thank you for reading my reaction. Sincerely yours, Your Name Kids' depression study gets $2 million Chair at Emory in child psychiatry endowed by Fuqua By GAYLE WHITE <gwhite@...> The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 12/21/06 An Emory University initiative to study and treat childhood depression has received a $2 million boost from J. Rex Fuqua, president and CEO of Atlanta-based Fuqua Capital Corp., a private investment firm. Fuqua, 57, who is also managing director of Fuqua Ventures, endowed a chair in child psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine. " Depression, mood disorders and other mental disorders are disorders of the life span, " said Fuqua. " One thing that I'm not sure most people are aware of is the prevalence of mood disorders in children. ... There's a tremendous need and a clear lack of both research spending and clinical services for children and adolescents. " Fuqua's late father, businessman and philanthropist J.B. Fuqua, struggled with depression. The elder Fuqua supported the Fuqua Center for Late Life Depression at the university's Wesley Woods gerontology center and endowed a chair in Late-Life Depression at the school of medicine. Mental health is a lifelong interest of Rex Fuqua, who holds a master's degree in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley. He also is chairman of the external advisory board of the Emory Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. " We're just trying to figure out the best way to diagnose and treat children and adolescents with depression and other mood and mental disorders, " he said. " Like any other disease, the sooner you're able to intervene, the better the chance of management. " The Emory Childhood and Adolescent Mood Disorders Program " will be a world-class program for both biomedical research and clinical care, " said Nemeroff, chairman of Emory's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The J. Rex Fuqua Chair in Child Psychiatry will join a long list of Fuqua family endowments, including the business school at Duke University, the Heart Center at Piedmont Hospital, the Orchid Center and Center for Conservation and Education at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Chair for Internet Strategy at the University of Georgia. ********************************************************************************\ *********************************
