(The Minnesota Daily is an independent, student-produced newspaper on the Twin

Cities campus of the University of Minnesota. More than 100 years old, The Daily

has grown from a small arts weekly founded near the 19th century's close to

become one of the nation's largest college newspapers, and one of the very few

that are entirely student-operated)

TeenScreen doesn't work

Recently you wrote a great editorial informing your community about the

underlying truth of the TeenScreen Program and warned people of the dangers of

participating in such a program. Then I see a column printed that is written by

a spokesperson of TeenScreen defending what I consider to be outright lies.

There is no proof that this program works. In 2004, the U.S. Preventive Services

Task Force reported no evidence that screening for suicide risk reduces suicide

attempts or mortality. Where is the proof, ? Where is the proof that this

program works?

There is no proof. You are playing games with the teen population. You are

promoting a program which instills fear that our children are at risk to kill

themselves. Your program does not work.
