Swine Flu vax

My doc here in Portland, OR, strongly urged me (220 TC) today to NOT take the aerosol form of the H1N1 vaccine snd wait instead for the injected form. She said this was very important and to not get into a position where the oral form was the only one dispensed. I assume this is because the aerosol is a live virus and the injected not so. Anyone care to comment? Would the wisest position be not to be one of the first patients to receive either vaccine? Several HIV+ friends including myself have taken the regular seasonal flu vaccine and we've all had side effects despite arguments that this "couldn't" happen. Would/could H1N1 vax be the same or worse? Obviously, getting the flu is the worst case scenario.

"HIV+ friends including myself have taken the regular seasonal flu vaccine and we've all had side effects despite arguments that this "couldn't" happen."The nasal vaccine is a "live" but weakened strain, so avoiding it is probably best for people with HIV.Stories abound of vaccine "reactions," but whether these are things that would have happened anyway, is an open question. Had mine a week ago, and other than some soreness in the deltoid, no problems. I have lots of intelligent friends who make the same assumption, so I don't dismiss your concerns off-handedly. It's not impossible that there are more reactions than are documented. As the H1N1 vaccine is just another flu vaccine variant, I'd expect no other issues.JB

I had my annual seasonal flu shot on Monday and no reaction- not even tender or

sore. But, I have never had any reaction to flu vax over the past 50+ years. My

parents were health fanatics and I started in grade school to get the vax

annually.

Be Well
