Guest guest
http://groups.msn.com/VibrationalHealing/electromagnetwavesa ndthebrain.msnw What kind of hope do OCD sufferers have for gaining relief from their symptoms using electromagnetic fields? Pridmore reports that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is being investigated as an intervention for OCD [20]. TMS, a technology that applies an electrical field to the cerebral cortices, is already a well established technology in diagnostic electrophysiology, where it has been used to engage in non-invasive functional mapping of the human brain [20]. A study conducted by Greenberg reported that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the right lateral prefrontal section of the brains of persons suffering from OCD resulted in significant reductions of compulsive symptoms for eight hours after the 20 minute stimulation period. It accomplished this relief by altering cortical excitability [21]. Another study, by Grisaru and associates, reported short lived improvements in certain symptoms post traumatic stress disorder through transcranial magnetic stimulation. Symptoms in which improvement was noted include anxiety and avoidance, symptoms often seen in persons afflicted with OCD [22]. Although the results may not be transferable, this study at least further suggests that TMS may be an effective means of relieving symptoms associated with OCD. Major depression often accompanies OCD, and TMS has been used successfully to elevate the moods of persons suffering from such depression. A study conducted Little and associates at the National Institute of Mental Health found that, at some of the levels and frequencies of TMS commonly used in treating depressed persons, no deterioration of cognitive abilities was noted. The study also concluded, however, that further work was needed to investigate other levels and frequencies which have been used in clinical trials for treating depression [23]. Finally, researchers have reported that a few of the manifestations of Tourette's Syndrome, a condition related to OCD, have been successfully treated by applying an electromagnetic field in the pico-tesla range extracranially to young male patient [24]. Could electromagnetic fields be partly responsible for the development and expansion of OCD? Unfortunately I could find no research that directly looked at this question. Knowing that radiation has been associated with schizophrenia and an increase in suicide and crime rates, however, one could say that it is at least a realistic possibility. Only further research will tell.
