Former doctor indicted on first-degree murder charge in killing and

mutilation of father

ABINGDON - A Washington County grand jury indicted a former doctor Tuesday

on a first-degree murder charge in the killing and mutilation of his father.

Prosecutors plan to try the case here, despite the man's claims that the

killing happened across the state line in Tennessee.

" There haven't been any developments that would change the direction of this

case, " Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis Godfrey said. " Hopefully we'll get his

matter concluded before the end of the summer. "

Vince Gilmer, 42, the former owner of Cane Creek Family Health Care

Center in Fletcher, N.C., allegedly strangled his 60-year-old father the

night of June 28, according to police.

The son cut off the man's fingers and thumbs and dumped the body along Good

Hope Road near South Holston Lake, prosecutors said.

Gilmer had checked his father, Dalton Gilmer, out of a mental

institution in ton, N.C., earlier that day.

He has confessed to the killing but insists it happened in County,

Tenn., at Little Wilbur Lake.

Gilmer - in letters, phone conversations and a jailhouse interview - has

said he took his father to the lake and strangled him in a rage brought on

by withdrawal from Lexapro, an antidepressant, and years of resentment over

childhood sexual abuse.

He said he cut off the fingers in a panic to hide his father's identity,

drove across the state line to dump the body, then took the fingers back to

North Carolina and dumped them in a river.

Gilmer said he believes he's guilty of involuntary manslaughter - not

murder.

Authorities in Washington County have called Gilmer's story dubious.

" I know what he's written, " Godfrey said. " Unless and until the authorities

in Tennessee assume jurisdiction, I'm going to prepare for trial. "

Gilmer could face life in prison if convicted as charged.

He remained in the Abingdon branch of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail

without bond. No trial date had been set.
