Kim,

The first thing you need on your planning committee is a consumer/survivor like

me. You can see my work at psychoslaves . You are heavily

represented by " experts " , but you need a " bi-polar in remission " like me.

To BHSRA Members:

This memo provides an update on the planning for BHSRA activities and

solicits your input. There is a survey attached to this email for you to

complete and also distribute to others who can provide insight for the

organization.

The BHSRA's mission is to improve the behavioral health (i.e., substance

abuse and mental health) of the public, and reduce societal burden of these

conditions, through promoting application of research and promoting

research-stakeholder partnerships committed to improving behavioral health

and educating the public and policy makers.

BHRSA is planning several activities to achieve these goals, including: 1)

Developing partnerships between researchers and diverse, key stakeholders;

2) Formulating priorities and opportunities to evaluate the impact of

implementation of findings/products from research; 3) Identifying key gaps

in knowledge; 4) Educating the public and policymakers about these

priorities, opportunities, and gaps; 5) Facilitating BHSRA members to share

their expertise and involvement in these areas. Each area will be jointly

developed by researchers and key stakeholders, and we hope such partnered

leadership will be a signature feature of BHRSA.

We are currently seeking funding to host study panels, twice yearly,

consisting of 30-40 research and stakeholder participants, and co-chaired by

academic and stakeholder members. Study panels will focus on identifying:

1. Well Developed Area for Dissemination: well-researched areas

regarding effective and efficacious treatment and/or delivery models

which need to be disseminated and infused into the behavioral health

services and delivery systems. Study panels must focus on designing

plans for this dissemination and implementation.

2. Knowledge Gap Requiring New Research: minimally-researched areas

that would benefit from a multi-stakeholder approach to knowledge

development, dissemination and implementation.

The planning group has initially selected four panel topics as potential

candidates:

1. improving behavioral health in primary care;

2. improving care for co-occurring disorders (severe mental illness and

substance abuse);

3. improving child mental health services delivery across service

sectors; and

4. overcoming disparities in behavioral health care.

We are seeking feedback on how to structure and flesh out these areas. For

example, can you provide examples within these areas of research progress

ready for broader dissemination? We are also interested in identifying

other priority areas.

In addition, we would like your help in identifying potential stakeholder

groups and individuals as members and potential partners, both in general

and for these particular priority areas.
