Guest guest
NEW YORKER MAGAZINE COVERS FIBROMYALGIA In its November 13th issue, The New Yorker ran a lengthy article on FMS. Was it balanced reporting or just bias disguised as logic? Find out what the article means for FMS/CFS patients, struggling for validation of their symptoms. http://chronicfatigue.about.com/library/weekly/aa111500a.htm
Guest guest
a, You have posted, as usual, many good articles over the last couple of days. Thank you. I happened to read this particular fibromyalgia piece in the " New Yorker " by author Dr. Jerome Groopman just a few days ago. It's a controversial essay, to say the least. I have two of Groopman's books and have read many of his articles previously, and I respect him and his work immensely. I was taken aback when I read this though. Even though I don't have fibromyalgia, I was feeling very protective of my " RA family " members who suffer from this awful condition. I have read quite a bit on the subject and can't say I agree with the tone or implications of this work. I even reread it to see if I may have misinterpreted what I read. I have a feeling this will generate a lot of heated response. Happy Thanksgiving, teacher and friend! Guest guest
, You're very welcome . I didn't get to read the article in the New Yorker. What were the author's views that were so distressing? I hope he wasn't another doctor that said it was " all in our head " !!!! The last thing we all need is a magazine like that running ads that aren't accurate! a ----- Original Message ----- From: Matsumura <Matsumura_Clan@...> < egroups> Sent: Thursday, November 23, 2000 12:08 PM Subject: Re: [ ] NEW YORKER MAGAZINE COVERS FIBROMYALGIA > a, > > You have posted, as usual, many good articles over the last couple of days. > Thank you. > > I happened to read this particular fibromyalgia piece in the " New Yorker " by > author Dr. Jerome Groopman just a few days ago. Guest guest
a, It wasn't so much Groopman's views that were upsetting, but what information and opinions he chose to include in the article and the tone of the piece. In fact, after reading the essay, I'm not sure what his very own views on fibromyalgia are. He interviewed several physicians and two patients regarding fibromyalgia, and the article ends with the reader given the distinct impression that fibromyalgia should not be classified as a rheumatic disease. Not only that, but there are " all in your head " (AIYH) implications coming forth from the views of a psyciatrist and neurologist Groopman queried. If you read the About.com article you posted which is the site guide's response to Groopman's " Hurting All Over: With so many people in so much pain, how could fibromyalgia not be a disease? " in the November 13 issue of " The New Yorker, " you'll get the gist of it. I believe she had a reaction quite similar to mine. As I said in my previous post, Dr. Jerome Groopman is an excellent medical writer, compassionate doctor, and keen thinker whom I respect, but I'm not sure what he intended to achieve with this article. Of course, since you've posted this, I've scoured the downstairs for my copy of " The New Yorker " so that I could review the article once again, but I believe Recycle Man has it now (could I have subconsciously been in a hurry to get it out of the house?). If I find it out there in cyberspace, I will post it. > , > You're very welcome . I didn't get to read the article in the New > Yorker. > What were the author's views that were so distressing?
