Guest guest
Dr. Lance, Here is the latest Faith and Freedom newsletter. Most of it contains articles about Christian civil rights litigation and threats to our civil liberties as a whole, e.g. the Patriot Act, so may be somewhat off-topic for this list. However, it contains the write-up Whitehead did recently about compulsory mental health screening and contact info for attorneys .. hold on to this everybody in case you should need it in future. November Faith in Freedom E-Newsletter November 2004 Faith in Freedom Newsletter -------------------------------------------------------------------- On November 2, Americans will head to the polls to elect a presidential candidate to preside over the next four years of our country's future. But regardless of who is at the nation's helm, we cannot afford to rely on our leaders in Congress or the White House to safeguard our religious freedoms and civil liberties. That responsibility rests with each and every one of us. As the first three words of the United States Constitution instruct, it is " we the people " that our government was established for. And it is " we the people " who must maintain it. At The Rutherford Institute, we are tireless in our efforts to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans. The battle never ends, but every so often a victory comes along to lend some encouragement. For example, this month's Faith in Freedom Newsletter features a recent victory that was handed down by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In his ruling, Judge C. Cacheris held that Potomac Falls High School wrongly discriminated against several students and their parents when school officials uprooted cross-engraved bricks, purchased by the families, from the school walkway. " The Court holds that having created a limited public forum, the school engaged in impermissible viewpoint discrimination against expression with a religious viewpoint. " The ruling, which came in response to a lawsuit filed by attorneys for The Rutherford Institute, requires school officials to immediately return the bricks to their former places in the " Walkway of Fame. " November's Faith in Freedom Newsletter also calls attention to the three-year anniversary of the USA Patriot Act. In his commentary, Whitehead sounds a warning over new efforts to expand the sweeping net of Patriot Act-like measures such as uniform driver's licenses, a.k.a. national identification cards, escalation of the government's ability to obtain personal records and the classification of 23 additional crimes punishable by the death penalty. One of the first legal organizations to produce an extensive analysis of the Patriot Act, The Rutherford Institute voiced its concerns about the mammoth legislation early on. To that extent, we have also posted a round-up of links to some timely and relevant resources regarding threats to our civil liberties. Finally, you might want to hold on to your privacy rights as you read Whitehead's commentary on the mandatory mental health screening of our nation's children-what he refers to as a modern-day " Orwellian nightmare. " On the eve of yet another nail-biting election, asks, " Should Christians consider voting for a third party in this election? " in our online magazine oldSpeak. And politics aside, if you're in any way concerned about the state of our nation and want to do something to protect your constitutional rights, consider casting your vote for freedom NOW by becoming a 2005 Supporting Member of The Rutherford Institute. -------------------------------------------------------------------- News Brick by Brick: U.S. District Court Grants Victory to Rutherford Institute, Orders School Officials to Restore Cross-Engraved Bricks to Walkway Keeping the Faith: Responding to Wynne Ruling, Rutherford Institute Issues Guidelines on Constitutional Prayer at City Council Meetings -------------------------------------------------------------------- Commentary Patriot Act II: Extending the Reach of the Police State An Orwellian Nightmare: Mandatory Mental Health Screening of Children -------------------------------------------------------------------- Legal Fighting the Aging Process: The Patriot Act Turns Three In Plain View: Constitutional Guidelines for Displaying the Ten Commandments -------------------------------------------------------------------- Oldspeak In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Presidential Candidate?A Christian Argument for Voting Third Party -------------------------------------------------------------------- Isn't it time you put your faith in action? give sign up discuss -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW CAN I SUPPORT YOUR ORGANIZATION?
