LONDON: A lawyer leapt 100 feet to her death after booking into a

£250-a-night London hotel near her home, it was revealed yesterday

afternoon. Ward, 52, a senior executive at Rolls-Royce, was

seen perched on a fourth-floor ledge as a policeman leant out of a

window below and pleaded with her not to do it.

A passing photographer captured the dramatic moments as a clearly

distraught ignored the officer and jumped. She died at the

scene outside Jurys Hotel in South Kensington yesterday.

The photographer, Jon Bushell, 39, said: " She rocked back and forth

and it seemed like a cry for attention. Suddenly she bent her legs

and held her arms out as if she was diving in a swimming pool and

jumped. Everyone was stunned. "

Friends of , who lived in nearby Onslow Gardens, were

yesterday struggling to understand why she took her life. She was

described as `highly talented' and `vivacious' with no money worries.

She was due to go on a holiday to Oman in three weeks with her best

friend which she booked recently and was also planning to fly to

California for her father's 90th birthday in 10 days.

was a keen Manchester United fan and had talked to a

friend on New Year's Day of trying to get tickets for her team's

game against Arsenal yesterday night.

Born in the US, was married briefly in California. She

worked as head of the legal department at Rolls-Royce Power

Ventures, a subsidiary of the main Rolls-Royce company. Five years

ago she became a naturalised British citizen.

Her work took her around the world. She earned a six-figure salary

and sat on the board of directors, reporting to the chief executive.

A close friend said she was on the verge of buying a new three-

bedroom flat in Kensington while she let her old property.

Oliver, a senior partner for the law firm s & s,

said: " She was very highly regarded in the profession as a person of

immense professional talent and was one of the warmest, kindest and

most generous individuals you are ever likely to meet. No one can

comprehend why this happened. She had no worries whatsoever as far

as I could see. She was vivacious, extremely intelligent and great

company. This has come out of the blue. "

Oliver said he had spoken to her on New Year's Day when they had

chatted about a number of things, including the Manchester United

game yesterday night.

He said she had given no hint of any concerns or problems.

A spokesman for Rolls-Royce said: " Everyone in the company who

worked with her is deeply shocked. Our thoughts are with her family

and friends. "

The spokeswoman added: " The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
