ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- The chairman of Veterans' Affairs committee in the U-S House will be in St. Louis later this month. Democrat Bob Filner will oversee a hearing into this week's revelation that the use of improperly sterilized dental tools at the Cochran V-A hospital may have exposed hundreds of area veterans to Hepatitis and HIV. Missouri Congressman Russ Carnahan says the hearing will be held on July 13th at a still-to-be-determined time and place, " Not only do we have to look into the procedures that were undertaken, but if there were management lapses, " said Carnahan. Maddox was one of the local veterans who received a letter from hospital officials informing them they have a " remote " chance of contracting H-I-V or hepatitis. " I thought the letter was very impersonal. It's the same as getting a letter in the mail stating that the front entrance to the VA is being closed, " expressed Maddox. Carnahan reiterated that feeling, " ly the range of emotions that I heard were scared to death, and mad as hell. " Veterans will have to wait at least six months before finding out whether they're at risk.
