In less than an hour after the start of the first gulf war in 1991,

the price of oil went down to $7 dollars per barrel (42 gallons)

from a high of about $35 dollars per barrel. Within 5 minutes of

this bottoming out, public service announcements were shown on

several different television channels explaining that oil producers

were " freezing gas prices at the current levels to keep the war from

being a burden on the American people. " It was all a political

maneuver as they should have lowered gas prices significantly since

they just experienced their cost decreasing by 500%. It was the

first time in history that oil prices didn't stay high after the

start of a war.
