With the current short-term achievements in organ transplantation,

patients, providers, and payers are increasingly recognizing long-term

outcomes as important measures of the success of solid organ

transplantation. The beneficial effects of the calcineurin inhibitors

largely responsible for successful short-term outcomes are partially offset

by acute and chronic nephrotoxic side effects. In addition, transplant

recipients incur significant morbidity related to cardiovascular disease,

diabetes mellitus, malignancy, and metabolic bone disease. This Resource

Center is a collection of the latest medical news and clinical information

on long-term health risks and clinical management issues in solid organ

transplantation.

transplantation and discusses issues including retransplantation, as based

on selected sessions at AASLD 2005.

Alendronate May Help Prevent Bone Loss Associated With Liver Transplant

Jul 26, 2005 - In a prospective, single center study, this drug prevented

bone loss in patients with osteoporosis and osteopenia and increased BMD in

osteoporotic patients within 24 months after transplant.

Monoclonal Antibody Prophylaxis Improves One-Year Survival Rates in Combined

Liver-Kidney Transplantation

MMF With Tacrolimus and Corticosteroids Minimizes Late Acute Rejection for

Adult Liver Transplants
