As with many prescribed ssris, the side effects of agitation and sleep disturbances are easily masked by the addition of a benzo, leading to a situation where the ssri is NOT being tolerated, but the side effects are counter balanced with a sedating drug. Of course, this leads to a bad situation for the individual who is then dependent on two classes of drugs. Also, and this is quite obvious to me, if medicaid recipients (i.e. the poor) are feeling anxiety (duh!), then anti-anxiety meds are the metaphorical antidote to poverty, frustration with limited opportunities, chaotic living conditions, etc...part of the reason why psychiatric medications are a means of social control. If a poor person is unhappy and anxiety ridden because of their life circumstance, take two and DON'T call in the morning. Its a lot easier to shut someone up than rectifying social inequity and injustice. _________________________________________________________________ Learn how to choose, serve, and enjoy wine at Wine @ MSN. http://wine.msn.com/

Guest guest
I totally agree. One thing I thought was interesting about this study is that the author is concerned that the mental patients with the drug problems get way much more of the addictive drugs than the ones that do not have any addictive personality. I think psych's just like to prescribe and drug companies are not losing sleep over it.
