It this weren't so sad, it would be funny, but I'm laughing anyway. Gives me

some inspiration for that Byrds' song based on the Bible verse about

" for everything, meds, meds, meds

there is a cure, meds, meds, meds.

there's a med for every purpose under Heaven.

A med to be born,

a med to die,

a med to plant,

a med to reap,

a med to kill,

a med to heal,

a med to laugh,

a med to weep. . . . "

The 23rd Prescription

Psychiatry is my shepherd, I shall not brood. It forceth me to lie down in

gross hospitals. It leadeth me beside the stilled patients. It restoreth

my infantile dependence.

It guideth me in paths of prescription-drug use for their Makers¹ sake.

Though I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death from side-effects, I

will fear no evil, for your medications are with me. Your drugs and your

electroshock, they comfort me.

Thou preparest a seclusion room for me under the surveillance of a therapy

aid; thou anointest my butt with needles. Thy drugs overwhelm me.

Surely psychiatry and drugs will follow me all the days of my life, and I

will live in the house of Prozac forever.

Former Chairman, Task Force on Religion and Mental Health, Commission on

Synagogue Relations, New York Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
