So far, I've seen a lot of references to the notion that cellulitis can occur in people with RA who are taking Enbrel. Guest guest Posted November 5, 2000 Report Share Posted November 5, 2000 Joan, In addition to Enbrel, Remicade may also make an RA patient more susceptible to cellulitis. From what I read out there, diabetes would be a more common reason for cellulitis than RA, but immunodeficiency (from either AIDS or drugs that suppress the immune system), peripheral vascular disease, systemic illness, and chronic steroid use were also listed as predisposing factors. The reason I asked this questions is because my oldest son, , has been having repeated episodes of Cellulitis. He went to the doctor Friday evening. His elbow was red, hot and swollen, all the way down to his wrist. The doctor out there (who happens to be new to him, as he just moved) thinks it's cellulitis again or perhaps the start of RA. He is in severe pain today, more so than Friday nite. I am really worried about him. He has also had costochondritis on several occasions. He will have to go back for blood work, but he refuses to do this until his Health Insurance " kicks in " . Kids -- they are so stubborn (guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, huh?). The doctor gave him an antiobiotic, but he seems to be getting worse. His other arm bothers him too, but it is not red, hot or swollen. He is supposed to go back to the doctor on Tuesday if he is not any better. Thanks again, , and I hope the above made some sort of sense. I am still having trouble putting my thoughts together. He was supposed to go back to the doctor on Tuesday if he wasn't any better, but he's going back tomorrow, as he is now running a fever. I'm really worried about him. He just moved to Colorado (October 11th) and doesn't know much about the medical system/doctors/hospitals in his area. He didn't give him anything for the pain, and he is really having a difficult time trying to deal with it. Jon, it is so good to see you posting again. You've really been missed!! My Brother in Law is the most slow reactive MD I have ever seen. He never feels anything is STAT, barely sounds alarms over anything, and has the most paced response to things...BUT: When my Dad got cellutis, he was as active and snap-paced as ants in a bake shop. ON TO ANTIBIOTICS IMMEDIATELY! MONITORING MY MD'S MUST HAPPEN AND KEEP HAPPENING TO PREVENT SPREAD! This was taken VERY seriously, and it needs to be. I have bad RA in my right foot and knee, but Aspirin, swimming, heat and inaction will beat that sucker down! How are YOU? Where in Colorado is he? I received this after most of all the other messages I answered. E-groups is really having hiccups again. Jon, I'm so sorry to hear that you are having such pain. Wish there was some way I could take it away from you and put it on myself. You are such a loving, giving, funny, compassionate soul, and I hate to see you (or anyone else) suffer so.I know that your sense of humor much get you through a lot of your trials and tribulations. Is there any chance you can get on Enbrel, Arava or Remicade? I certainly hope so. My hubby and I were sick for two weeks with bronchitis and hi temps, so I couldn't take the Enbrel. Have to wait until I get doc's clearance before I can start taking it again. He wants to make sure that my lungs are totally clear and that there is no sign of infection anywhere. Didn't realize just how much it was helping until I went off it. I'm in a flare now, but this, too, shall pass. lives in Lakewood, CO, which I think is near Denver, so he definitely should be able to find good medical care. It's just a matter of him taking the time to look. I have tried to impress upon him the importance of this, and I hope he takes me seriously. Thanks again for your concern. Hang in there, Jon.
