A study published in the British Dental Journal today has warned of the

dangers of tongue piercing. The fashion craze, made popular by high-profile

figures such as Zara , can damage teeth and gums, as well as risking

infection with HIV, hepatitis, herpes and oral thrush. In serious cases,

patients have suffered blood loss and breathing difficulties after a tongue

piercing. One woman who had her tongue pierced had to undergo surgery

because her tongue healed over the stud. Tamer Theodossy, a visiting

specialist at the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust, has linked

14 health complications, including speech impediments and nerve damage, to

the practice of tongue piercing.
