(AP) - A psychiatric evaluation of a teenager charged with slashing the throat of an elderly woman has been delayed because the girl spent nearly a week in a hospital on a mental health hold, county officials said. The 16-year-old Oakland girl is accused of cutting the throat of the 75-year-old woman with a kitchen knife on March 16. The woman was walking with her husband in a quiet Berkeley neighborhood when the girl approached and slashed her throat. The girl appeared in Alameda County Juvenile Court for a scheduled detention hearing Wednesday. County officials said the tests weren't completed because the girl had to be hospitalized six days on a psychiatric hold. Psychiatric holds are standard for people with mental disorders considered a danger to themselves or others. County officials said the delays also were caused by misunderstandings between the county probation and health departments in trying to coordinate the tests. The teenager is being held on attempted murder charges. A counselor who authorities say was with the girl at the time and helped her flee was arraigned last week on charges of being an accessory to attempted murder and is free on $15,000 bail. Hamaseh Kianfar, 30, has resigned from her position as a part-time juvenile hall mental health worker.
