Here's my note to the newspaper:

I am very happy that the Kennedy family wants charges filed against the psychiatrist that placed Yates on a potentially lethal combination of psychiatric drugs, whose side effects and longterm withdrawal can and do produce violent impulses in some people. When I first heard of the drownings, my reaction was "WHICH medication was she on?" Not if, or maybe, but WHICH? My friends and I even make bets as to which psych med are involved in some of these bizarre crimes. Hasn't the media figured out yet that even the mentally ill don't commit crimes such as this, but people on drugs such as Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, DO? How many more cases will it take before the media cries foul of the drug companies and the doctors who pass these drugs out like candy, switching the patient from one drug to another without taking into account the protracted withdrawal and side effects of doing that? Unless and until YOU take one of these drugs, you can never understand what they do to your thought processes. If you weren't insane BEFORE taking these drugs, they will do it! The media has to stop being bought off by the Pharmas and start placing blame where blame is due and that is with the very medications themselves which are supposed to prevent these tragedies. Please engage in responsible journalism and start reporting WHICH psychiatric meds are involved with WHICH crimes. You'll start to see an alarming pattern, such as the 16-year-old in Michigan who set fire to his school 10 days after being prescribed Paxil. Which SSRI was the police officer on in New Jersey when he went door-to-door killing his neighbors before shooting himself. The mentally ill don't commit these kinds of massacres, but people on drugs such as Paxil, Prozac et al DO! It's time to stop blaming mental illness for these acts and start pointing the wagging finger of blame at the medications themselves. I am a plaintiff in the class action lawsuit against the makers of Paxil, which I only took for a few weeks before it catapulted me into a manic state. I, too, had the potential to become a headline, so I totally understand how Yates did what she did.
