There policy was that if you have documentation that you have received the vaccine, and you don't have any other detectable viruses, you can donate blood. Now I'm not sure if that has changed. There was a report of a " former " Hepatitis C patient in France, who had been through REBETRON and became undetectable. He though he could donate blood and did. Because they didn't find any trace of HCV, they accepted his blood. But when they looked over the paperwork he had filled out, they discovered he did have a Hep C exposure and rejected the blood. You know we got vaccines for hep a and hep b.... so does that mean, people who have antibodies for hep A and/or B cannot donate blood? Or do they check to make sure those antibodies are vaccine antibodies and not exposure antibodies? IF.. One woman from Pensacola, FL told me that she was interrogated about the same info, sexual partners, IV drug use, cocaine use, if she was ever homeless, etc. She was saying they " needed " the info to gain further funding for out reach programs, but she knew they were compiling data for the CDC. One aspect of this interrogating treatment frightens me, the lack of privacy and all, but the other part of me, the HCV research and educator, realizes that gaining this info is critical for the powers that be to discover how to curtail the exposure to the public. It is very common for the HIV community to be asked all of these questions. Here in AZ we have several organizations that gather this critical data and " sell " it to the health department to help determine how the budget is divided. The average rate is $50 per patient intake sheet. And since most of us will agree that AIDS/HIV was the precursor disease to the next big outbreak of HCV, we look to them to see how they functioned and how they are funded. We have been approached by the Arizona Health Dept. and will try and help get the federal dollars any way we can! Even if that means getting personal info to collect for the CDC. These guys run strictly on numbers and data. That's how they play the game! It's not fair, by any stretch of the imagination and my fear is that somehow the insurance companies will be given the right to refuse patients in the future based on this info. Then ask all kinds of questions about sexual parners and such. Then put you on a list that was sent to the CDC.
