The Hepatitis B Foundation is proud to be the meeting organizer and sponsor, and is working closely with this year’s co-chairs Drs. Adam Zlotnick, Indiana University, and Pei-Jer Chen, National Taiwan University. Important deadlines to remember are for Travel Grant Awards (July 30) and General Abstracts (August 13). A recent study in Italy measured the 6-month alcohol and coffee intake of 749 people with either chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C. The results indicate that those who had more than three alcoholic drinks per day had a 4-6 times increased risk of developing cirrhosis, which was reduced in those who drank more coffee. This study confirms the dramatic negative effects of alcohol intake on an HBV-infected liver, and offers more support for coffee as a potential liver protector (Liver International: 30(6);867-870).
