International HBV Meeting:

Oct. 9-13 in Taipei, Taiwan

2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the International HBV Meeting that is

scheduled for October 9-13 at the Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan. This will

be the first time that the meeting is held in China, which is exciting and

relevant since the greatest burden of hepatitis B is in China and the seminal

studies confirming perinatal HBV transmission and the fatal link between HBV and

liver cancer were conducted in Taiwan by Dr. Palmer Beasley. The Hepatitis B

Foundation is proud to be the meeting organizer and sponsor, and is working

closely with this year’s co-chairs Drs. Adam Zlotnick, Indiana University, and

Pei-Jer Chen, National Taiwan University. Important deadlines to remember are

for Travel Grant Awards (July 30) and General Abstracts (August 13). Learn more

First Congressional Hearing on Chronic Viral Hepatitis

In response to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on Hepatitis and Liver

Cancer, a Congressional hearing was held on June 17th, entitled Viral Hepatitis:

The Secret Epidemic, which attracted more than a dozen members of Congress to

participate. During the hearing, the Committee urged Congress to pass HR 3974

that calls for increased testing and treatment for chronic viral hepatitis.

Witnesses included U.S. Representatives Hank (GA), Bill Cassidy (LA) and

Mike Honda (CA), as well as Dr. Koh, Assistant Secretary HHS. While the

bi-partisan Committee agreed that something must be done to prevent the spread

of viral hepatitis, the main obstacle remains funding. Learn more »

WHO Adopts Resolution to Fight Viral Hepatitis

Last Month, the 63rd World Health Assembly adopted a historic resolution

calling on the World Health Organization to develop a comprehensive approach to

the global control and prevention of viral hepatitis. The plan includes efforts

to identify infected individuals, develop new technologies for vaccination and

treatment, and integrate proven public health strategies across health systems.

Hepatitis B, Alcohol and Coffee: How Do They Interact?

A recent study in Italy measured the 6-month alcohol and coffee intake of 749

people with either chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C. The results indicate that

those who had more than three alcoholic drinks per day had a 4-6 times increased

risk of developing cirrhosis, which was reduced in those who drank more coffee.

This study confirms the dramatic negative effects of alcohol intake on an

HBV-infected liver, and offers more support for coffee as a potential liver

protector (Liver International: 30(6);867-870). Learn more »
