Guest guest
Guys- The best thing my internist did was send me right away for an MRI. It showed the huge osteophyte pointing at my spinal cord, the disintegrated disc at C5/C6, C6/C7, the cervical stenosis and cervical spondylosis. It STILL took a year to schedule surgery, conservative treatment usually the best course, but it wasn't for me I needed it right away to be better and in the meantime I lost my home, job, etc because I couldn't get out of bed without ever increasing amounts of morphine for a year. Almost 4 years post onset, 3 years post anterior cervical discectomy & severe carpal tunnel surgeries both hands, and having received my first SSDI check ever, living with family, I am grateful for every minimal pain day. The surgery took away 50% of the pain, which has made it manageable. What works for me to self manage since I still haven't gotten medicare or medical treatment (been without for 1 1/2 years and truly suffering) mostly is just not doing anything. Literally. Horizontal on bed. The next biggest technique is ice on my neck. I purchased some sheets meant for use in an ice chest one summer, with little pillows that form ice, and I can roll it up to the right thickness to make a little pillow under my neck to lay on my back, or I can use it single thickness on a wider area. Warm water pool therapy was a godsend to get me up and moving again after 18 months horizontal 20/7. I still spend about 16 hours a day in bed, just to be horizontal and sometimes the pain is so bad I don't think I can bear it but I do somehow. I practice mental visualization, and bio feedback technique I learned years ago for stress reduction to train my mind away from focusing on it and how much I've lost. I had a CT scan also which further documented right before surgery. I have gained another 85 lbs and due to this my blood pressure is sky high and being treated. I'd love to lose weight and get the blood pressure back down. The blood pressure was elevated initially as a side effect of the pain. Shortly, MRI, Catscan, surgery, warm water pool therapy, physical therapy to strengthen the muscles that hold up my neck, ice on my neck and doing very little are what have worked for me and my right scapula right arm pain. in OR
