Dear Lynn,

You said:

<<From my experience, active benzo withdrawal will last 3-4 weeks...

don't be surprised if your body takes awhile to readjust... think of it as

heroin... you wouldn't expect to feel 'well' right after detoxing from

heroin...

Xanax, again from my understanding, is a more toxic compounded chemical

as are the SSRI's.>>

In my experiences with people, the acute withdrawal of

benzodiazepines can be longer, but the SSRIs produce more

permanent changes in brain structure that result in what I think

of as physical " flashback " scenarios. These, without intervention,

can last a lifetime. This is not to say that the benzodiazepines

do not have a " chronic " withdrawal component - they do.

It appears that this is less disruptive to people's lives than the

SSRIs.

If you want to explore this more, and tell me more of your

experiences, I'd be glad to do that with you :-)

Dear Crusaders,

There is an excellent info site on all benzos at www.benzo.org.uk,

with a support group of over 1300 members. There is one very

outstanding difference between benzos and SSRIs and that is benzos

don't drive you to commit bizarre violent acts like SSRIs do.

A very weird difference is that benzo users, on average, are

better educated than SSRI users.

An excellent book on the subject is Addiction By Prescription

written by Joan Gadsby. She was taking them for 23 years.

People recovering from benzos suffer " withdrawal " symptoms similar

to SSRI ones for many months and even years after their last pill.

Just as you guys have Dr. Anne helping you out, benzo

sufferers have Dr. Ashton, who has written a book on

withdrawing from benzos.

Benzo sufferers don't have a " Crusader " attitude, so I left the

group after a few months.

Tim - definitely good advice. Ashton is 'it'. One thing

about benzo withdrawal is that I experienced was it made me

depressed beyond belief - dysphoria, I believe is the name for it.

Can see your way out of anything. It was a hideous withdrawal

whereas Paxil was just plain horrible - but predictable. My arms

and chest burned with the xanax. I believe that doctors should

not be able to prescribe anything that they have not taken

themselves - or withdrawn from... themselves. And, if the drugs

are so lethal, then no one should take them unless it is for acute

hospital use.

I truly despise the doctors who harm... and know they are doing

so but are too afraid to loose their practices and income.
