Guest guest
There was recently a very lengthy discussion of this topic in Optimal_Health_and_Longevity group. Go to Optimal_Health_and_Longevity/messagesearch/1111?qu\ ery=ketongenic to read archived messages. An an initial message of the thread is on the bottom. Since she is an Endocrinologist, I'm assuming she knows something about it. Anyway, her take is that if you want to lose weight, controlling your carb intake to lessen insulin resistance WORKS -- but you don't have to put your carb intake SO low that you go into a ketogenic state. She doesn't believe the ketogenic state is a good idea. Anyway, I'm trying it as an experiment. I personally do not do well with being ketogenic -- leads to migraines. My office-mate is on Atkins and eating very few carbs -- while I'm eating, say, half a baked potato with a meal. We'll see who does the best in the long haul! So far I can say that I feel a lot better and more muscular (and thinner), and am not grouchy or hungry and am sleeping soundly (which I never do if I'm ketogenic). I personally have an issue with the fact that everyone I've known who does ketogenic diets has relied on lots of products to help them -- things like pepperoni sticks, Atkins bars, special Atkins tortillas. At that point I don't know that the diet is about getting HEALTHY, it's just about losing pounds at all costs. I don't know if being ketogenic is unhealthy or not, but living off diet bars isn't the way to go. It looks like they have ultra-processed something to replace the flour or whatever would normally be used so things can LOOK full of carbs but not be metabolized as carbs. If Schwartzbein is correct, then a person can still get thin and muscular, but do it more slowly, end your reliance on processed foods, and eat more normally. I don't know that I agree with her presumption that insulin-balance is the answer to " life, the universe, and everything " , but eating fewer carbs and more fat and protein and vegies is certainly safe and easy. Also, something that neither Schwartzbein nor most of the ketogenic advocates mention (but was mentioned in the thread link above), is that a lot of the healing people get from these kinds of diets have to do with the exclusion of grains (and most processed foods, which contain a lot of hidden allergens, sometimes). Undiagnosed grain allergies cause a LOT of health problems. Heidi
