Toxins in fertilizers

I just read a very good book, an expose entitled, " Fateful Harvest " ,

by Duff on the practice of " recycling " industrial waste and

toxic by-products into fertilizers and soil amendements used by

American farmers and home gardeners. Some of these so-called

fertilizers contain heavy metals, even radioactive contaminants which

persist in the soil for years, and can be taken up by plants then

used for human consumption. This is not just about sewage sludge,

either.

I know most of WAPF members are very careful about what we eat,

choosing grass fed and organics whenever possible, if not always.

There is a caveat here, however. Some organic farmland or pastureland

was previously farmed conventionally, so we are not out of the

woods. If you are a member of a CSA, you might want to find out how

the land was used prior to becoming organic. If you grow some of

your own food, you will definately find this information very

interesting. I am planning on buying more land in a couple of years

and will definately have the land tested for toxic residues.

Patty , the heroine of this true story, reminds me a lot of

Sally. She has uncovered dangerous practices used by American

industry and tried to stop them. Unfortunately, she came up against

some powerful economic interests, which caused her to tone down her

mission, but she still continues. The book is not only interesting

reading it is an eye-opener!

If anyone has read " Fateful Harvest " , I'd be interested in your feed

back. Thanks.
