Thanks, Connie, I have felt a lot of guilt over this. To see my daughter so

heartbroken was difficult for me. It has undermined my trust in

pharmaceuticals, human and veterinary. I really think benefit needs to be

weighed against risks. I our area (Michigan) there has not been a case of West

Nile Virus in equinines, canines or humans. Only a few birds have been found to

have the virus. Obviously, in this case the risk outweighed the benefit. I

will not enter into any medication quite so niavely anymore. My daughter who is

startig college this fall decided not to get the menigitis vaccine. I think her

decision was made, in part, based on our experience with the pony. Probably in

the case of the menigitis vaccine the benefit would outweigh the risk but there

was no convincing her of that. Thank you for your understanding and

condolences.
