I had a 16 year old that came in that i started a conversation with. After a few minutes of talking i discovered that this kid a few months ago had a siezer. They put him through all the test, you know, the standard suck you and your insurance dry reek more havoc on your health and they STILL DON'T KNOW what your problems is. SOOOOO what do they do??? They prescribe Depakote and this kid and he is now ordered to stay on this trash in order to keep his liscense. I just want to scream sometimes. The horror stories don't stop. I hear them all the time. I used to ask myself this question all the time, but how many people have to die before America wakes up? WAKE UP AMERICA!!!! Connie Sara, i hear ya girl. My EEGs were inconclusive but nevertheless, that was me rolling on the floor with grand mals. Some forms of seizure disorders do not show up on EEGs because they originate too deep in the brain for the current technology to record them. I did 15 years on anticonvulsants which, after a long period without seizures, I successfully discontinued. Funny thing, my " atypical bipolar " disorder also disappeared. I have since learned that seizure activity in that part of the brain -- the temporal lobe -- can mimic the symptoms of psychiatric disorders including hallucinations, hypersexuality, mania, explosions of irrational emotions, just about everything labeled " mental illness " . Anticonvulsant can treat (occassionally cure, as I think I was?) the seizure activity in most cases though many cases TLS can be drug resistent. However, antipsychotics, antidepressants, stimulants and even lithium can lower the seizure threshold and make the condition worse, making the patient seem even " crazier " . And thus in " need " of more drugs. Turns out, this disorder runs in my family. My son's " bipolar " is temporal lobe seizures as are my brother's and nephew's " mood disorders " . Only my brother ever tried Depakote and he didn't like it. But it did help short term with his Wellbutrin withdrawal. I used Dilantin (liked it) then when Tegretol came out, that (didn't like it as much). (The doctors always have to push the new drugs no matter how well the old ones are working.) My son and my brother have successfully used Lamictal; my son does not take any medication any longer. While there are side effects to any medications, no one in my family regrets taking any of the anticonvulsants for the time we took them, not the way we regret the other classes of drugs, particularly the SSRIs which almost killed my son.
