Former NBC network news magazine anchor Jane ey reveals she's bipolar in

her autobiography.

ey writes in " Skywriting: A Life Out of the Blue, " coming out Tuesday,

that she takes lithium to control her mood swings.

She said the problem started in 2001 when she came down with a bad case of

hives. She took steroids and had a rare reaction that set off the bipolar

disorder.

ey said she spent nearly three weeks in the hospital under an assumed

name.

Excerpts of " Skywriting " have been published in People magazine.

ey, 53, begins hosting her new syndicated talk show, " The Jane ey

Show, " later this month.

Does anyone have a list?

And I wonder how " rare " this reaction is. Considering that it is

estimated that only one in 10 adverse reactions are reported, this is

probably a lot more common than we are being led to believe.

Longtime TV newswoman Jane ey has revealed the secret battle she

fought against bipolar disorder, an illness with frightening mood

swings. The former host of " Dateline NBC " says it got so bad that she

checked herself into a New York hospital under an assumed name in the

spring of 2001 - and spent three weeks there under close observation.

" I became accustomed to mealtime trays with plastic utensils and no

knives, to leaving the bathroom door open at least a crack, to

sleeping with a lady in white sitting 6 feet away in the darkness,

keeping an eye on me, " ey writes in her new book, " Skywriting: A

Life Out of the Blue, " excerpted in People magazine today.

In an interview for an upcoming " Dateline " show, ey talks about

her extreme mood swings she suffered, saying she alternately felt

" revved up " and emotionally drained.

" Think of the mood swings that, you know, you have a bad mood and then

tomorrow you feel better, " she tells former colleague Stone

on the show, which will air on Sept 1.

" Mood swings are normal ... but when the mood swings are destabilized,

they just become more pronounced. The highs are higher and the lows

are equivalently lower. "

ey - who also co-hosted NBC's " Today " show for years - says the

bipolar disorder was triggered by a rare adverse reaction to a steroid

prescribed for an ordinary case of the hives.

As a side effect of the steroids, " I was revved, " she writes in the

book.

" I was so energized that I didn't just walk down the hall, I felt like

I was motoring down the hall. ... I told everyone that I could

understand why men felt like they could run the world, because I felt

like that. This was a new me, and I liked her. "

But then she crashed. In the spring of 2001, suffering from

exhaustion, ey took a sabbatical from " Dateline " and quietly

admitted herself into the hospital.

She planned to be out for two months, but her recovery stretched to

six.

Her husband, " Doonesbury " cartoonist Garry Trudeau, had watched his

world-famous wife struggle.

She says a doctor finally told him: " Your wife is very sick. "

" I think he might have been relieved, " ey recalls in the

" Dateline " interview, " because he and he alone had seen that something

was wrong and had been helpless to do anything about it.

" I think he wanted his wife back ... but ... he was in for a turbulent

few months. "

Word of ey's battle comes just as she's preparing to launch her

daytime talk show, " The Jane ey Show, " which will air on WNBC/

Ch. 4 at 10 a.m. starting Aug. 30.

ey also will share intimate details about her illness on " Today "

Aug. 30.
