Guest guest
Every experience is so different. But, for the most part if you have had cholesteatoma before you will need to be continuously monitored on a periodic basis to be sure the c-toma hasn't returned. If even the slightest bit of c-toma is left behind following your surgery there is a change that it would return. There are stories of people who have one surgery and never have a problem again for the rest of their lives and there are stories of people who have had countless surgeries and still have it come back. I had my second surgery in October of 2010 and have been able to hear wonderfully since and I've had zero complications. However, after my first surgery the c-toma came back and re-damaged my ear drum and hearing bones. Try to stay positive and focus on an ideal outcome. I understand wanting to be prepared for the worst but it's amazing what a positive attitude can do for your physical self when you are going through a health issue. Good luck! I mean it seems to me that having it removed then moving on with your life doesn't seem to be the norm? Is this life long battle? I'm just not sure what I am in for...please let me know. Lets assume I have a worst case scenario? What can I expect? Thanks for any input.
Guest guest
Hi Bradford, For me this has been something I have battled with since I was 16. Some are simpler than others. My life has been fairly normal but there are times where I am not feeling to well...having dizzy spells, drainage, ear pain, etc. But I do lead a pretty normal life. There are things I have had to adapt too. I am careful getting on a ladder for example. If I am dizzy I don't drive. The c-toma I had last year was a doozy. It went through my canal wall toward my face. It had destroyed the 3 bones completely in my ear. I had the fullness feeling. But once that was removed (took 2 surgeries) then I felt better than I had in years. I just had surgery yesterday for the exact same thing you are having. They went in through my ear canal rather than behind the ear and let me tell you the difference is amazing. I haven't had hardly any pain. I am up moving around better than with previous surgeries. I believe the quicker they remove the c-toma the better it is. There is less damage and it doesn't grow and get out of control which puts you at risk. I had a tympanomastoidectomy and I am doing awesome today. The growth was behind the eardrum so the surgeon simply lifted the eardrum and removed the c-toma. Took less than an hour. Best of luck to you. Jenni > > > Based on what I am reading here, it seems to me that having a cholesteatoma is not has simple as it appears.
