Dear Mel,

If there is any way for you to change doctors,

can you? Is this a primary care, or a specialist?

What ever he is, he is going to fight you every step

of the way it sounds like. You could save yourself a

lot of headaches by changing NOW. What ever you do,

DON'T back down even one inch, this is your life you

are talking about (certainly it's not his!).

If you haven't had a biopsy. That should be your

next step. I assume you haven't had one since you

say,

'If I have cirrhosis'.

Genotype 2's are the easiest to get rid of, 3's

are next, then 4's, then 1a, then 1b. That is from

the easiest to the hardest.

There is compensated cirrhosis, and decompensated

cirrhosis (or 'end-stage' liver disease). The

National Institute of Healths guidelines for treatment

state that anyone with cirrhosis should be evaluated

individually to determine if treatment is indicated.

With all the latest info on how interferon can help,

and sometimes even reverse cirrhosis, I would be

wanting treatment ESPECIALLY if I had cirrhosis.

I can't stress enough how badly you need to find

a different doctor! If you are NOT getting the tests

you should be having now, and he's looking for reasons

to NOT treat, I have to assume he is probably loosing

money by doing these things, like Marty was explaining

in a previous post on HMO doctors. You need a doc you

cares about people in addition to his bank account.

After a change in doctors your next step would be a

biopsy, unless there are clear-cut indications that

you have cirrhosis, which since he didn't even want to

run the test to see if you have HCV I am assuming you

don't. If that assumption is wrong, let me know. Feel

free to e-mail me privately if you need to.

Take care,

Claudine
