" People do not like the interference factor of creams and devices and are moving toward being able to take a pill, " says Every, CEO of Enhance Biotech, the company developing the drug. According to a report in Chemistry & Industry Magazine, a small study in Europe has " shown the pill to have some effect on everyone tested, " although detailed results were not available. The 30 participants ranged in age from mid-20s to mid-50s, were in stable relationships of at least six months' duration and were having intercourse three times a week during the course of the study. They kept diaries, filled out questionnaires and used a stopwatch to record ejaculation times. Without treatment, the men ejaculated after an average of 11 seconds of sex. Use of the new drug " revealed a statistically significant positive result. " A reasonable time before ejaculation is considered to be between five and eight minutes. There were no side-effects reported, and larger studies are now being prepared. The pill combines the action of two different drugs in one molecule -- a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and a micro-opioid. SSRIs are antidepressants that have a common side-effect of delaying ejaculation. The micro-opioid has an analgesic effect, causing a dulling of sensation, but, according to the company, at the right dose this will not affect orgasm and normal sexual function is retained. The micro-opioid also affects the soft muscular tissue around the genital area, appearing to allow the man to exert greater muscle control. The drug starts working within two hours, so it could be taken on an as-needed basis. About 29 per cent of the male population is thought to be affected by premature ejaculation at some time in their lives, Every says. He adds that the earliest his product could reach the market would be in three to four years. Currently, there is no pill approved for premature ejaculation. Existing treatments include SSRIs, anesthetic creams and condoms, as well as techniques such as thinking non-sexual thoughts and pausing when ejaculation is about to occur.
