It sounds as bad there as it is here! I bought some tomatos, broccoli, lettuces, and herbs the other day. I have to keep them inside until it stops freezing. I live in Montana. Wish me luck, I haven't ever tried my own garden before. I also am going to cultivate dandelions in my yard, just in case things get really bad. At least they are easy to grow! My neighbors will hate me! They have a perfect yard-no weeds! But I'll be damned if my family goes without some nutrition. I am looking into other edible weeds and wild plants. The Gov't over her is just as corporate minded and greedy as ever! That toxic stuff is everywhere, even in baby food/products. I already posted the latest stunt on the no-genetically- modified- foods site, i.e. South Africa contaminates the African continent. Mind you, we are the only African country that grows its staple food (white maize) in genetically modified form. Non-GM corn is exported (while we are being force-fed with the crap). One load was exported to Kenya where Greenpeace found out that the allegedly "pure" maize was contaminated with

Monsanto's MON810, which has been banned by the French government and other European countries. At first I couldn't believe that the shenanigans in our country had the audacity to grow that toxic stuff in SA. Sure enough, the Minister of Agriculture had approved MON810 for feed and food! If you have a garden, grow your own veggies, you can even plant them in pots on your balcony. Hi, Trina,

Start your herbs inside, now. Also start plants such as tomatoes and other plants that have need of a long growing season. You can find that information on the envelope contining the seed. If you can't find it there, Google Gurney Seed & Nursery. Once you get to their Home Page, you can probably find the information by searching for "growing season" or checking out each variety of plant. One used to be able to find that information easily. They had maps of the country with different color-coded "zones" and each zone had a different length between "last frost" and "first frost." The length of time between the two is the growing season. Need more help or advice? I'm sure there are many who can help. I'll certainly be glad to help in any way I can, if you want to contact me via the group or personally.

You might also want to get in touch with Native Americans in the area. They would very likely have information about local plants used throughout their history. ~~Ruth

Yes! That's great!! Make sure you don't over-water the plants!! Plant roots don't like to go swimming! The easiest thing to do is to check the soil with your finger. You'll be able to tell if the soil is dry (needs water), moist to the touch (just right) or too wet (bad! Let the soil dry out to the moist to the touch level. Also, it is far better to water the plants from below--pouring water into a shallow pan or saucer and allowing the soil to absorb the water from the bottom of the container. ~~Ruth
