Guest guest
Tatezi, Don't panic! Hep A is NOT airborne. It is present in contaminated food or water. While it is very contagious in this manner, it takes more than just being around a person who has it. I spent a whole weekend with my Dad, who had it and we didn't know it until a week later. (I thought he looked yellow and acted like he wasn't feeling good!) That was the good news. The bad news is that if someone with HCV gets it, it can be VERY bad. Weren't you immunized for A? It was the first thing my GI doc had me do, get immunized for both A and B! If not, I would get on the phone tomorrow and call your GI doctor and tell him you have possibly been exposed to hepatitis A. I THINK there is a gamma globulin that can be given to help prevent infection. (I'm not sure about that.) At the very least, you can be on the lookout for it. And if you are not immunized for A and B, you should do this right away! (And if you are not immunized then I would postpone any visits until you know that both your friend and her grandson are safe to be around. One liver disease on top of another is NOT good - especially A.) Good luck - let us know what happens! Guest guest
When I was little all of us had to get Gamma Globulim shots when my Dad had Hep A. All I remember about it was Daddy itched and my Mom did not believe he did and tell him he could not itch. Daddy was right, wasn't he? Too bad he and she not around to say I told you so. I think they go by weight for the Gama Globulim. Take Care, Connie __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Thanks, Claudine. Ofcourse I was panicked when I came home from work and saw her message. And no, I was never immunized but guess that's top of the list.. Wonder why it was never recommended to me :-( Since I posted my note to the list I've been researching and yes, there is a something globulin and I'll try to get that tomorrow. I started echinacea once I read her note to give my immune system a little boost. I was with him at the exact time he was contagious according to my research and the incubation period is 30days. That means I have two more weeks to sweat this out. But the good thing is that the something globulin works through the first two weeks after exposure. My doctor will be hearing from me first thing in the morning. Thanks for responding so quickly, Claudine. I was really freaked when I first read her note. A little research and knowing what you are up against sure can make a difference. Tatezi claudine intexas wrote: > Tatezi, > Don't panic! Hep A is NOT airborne. Guest guest
Hi, I do not think there is any reason to panic unless you really shared food or drink with the jaundiced kid, Hep A is not really contagious. Therefore chances of your getting it is negligible. You should however get yourself vaccinated. All Chr Hep C people should have Hep A and Hep B vaccination. Guest guest
Well, panicking is something I know all about, lol! Gee, I really feel like not only did your doctor let you fall through the cracks on this immunization thing, we did too! It's such a basic thing! EVERYONE diagnosed with HCV should be immunized for both A and B. I'm just surprised it hasn't been brought up lately. Is there any chance you already had antibodies to it, meaning you were already immune? That could be one reason why you weren't told to get one. I am supposed to get a booster for the B, since I didn't take with the first round, but haven't been in much of a rush since I'm not exactly at much risk of exposure. Supposedly a new immunization is coming out for those who don't develop antibodies from the current vaccine, so maybe I'll just wait. Now the A though is a whole different story, you can get that anywhere, anytime, if you eat any food or drink any water that is contaminated. To this day my dad has no idea where he got his. He THINKS he got it in some water he drank when he stopped to get gas in a small, run down gas station. But really, it could have been in the salad he ate in a restaurant. Who knows? Claudine PS: The food and water is contaminated from the feces of someone who has it, which usually means unwashed hands. __________________________________________________
