Guest guest
Vitamin K has been linked to leukemia and I believe it includes oral vaccines. If you are leaving the placenta on for that long, and your baby will be breastfed, there will most likely be no problems.I also wanted to comment on something called the Lotus Birth... have you ever heard of it? What it is, is women leave the placenta connected to the baby until it dries up and breaks off on its own (usually within 3 to 6 days). The health benefits of this practice is immense. I would highly recommend researching this. If the duration doesn't seem like something you can handle, there is always the option of leaving it connected for a day or so and then cutting it. The longer the better On Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:03 PM, godardam <godardam@...> wrote: Greetings all, I am due at the end of July (the 25th) and having learned of the side effects of the so-called vitamin K shot, we are declining that. Our midwife says she plans to leave the placenta attatched to the baby for up to 4 hours to ensure all blood that would go to baby and toxins to be eliminated are able to completely finish. So after reading some research today that it's possible that severing the cord from the placenta blood too early is possibly contributing to the need for the vitamin K. Anyone know of side effects from the oral; here's what I bought: K-Quinone-is an oil soluble source of vitamin K-1 (phytonadione), the non-toxic natural form of vitamin K present in plants. K-Quinoe is extracted from alfalfa, nettles and green tea. It is now in a base for Olive Extract and Soy Extract.. Each drop provides 2 mg of vitamin K-1 activity. The bottle is now 1/2 oz size and contains 440 doses put they have a longer shelf life. It appears that it is 6 months now. Guest guest
Hullo . Congratz on your bundle of joy to come..... Soon. I dont think you should have to worry about giving baby Any vit K. You can eat more leafy greens or take the vit K suppliment yourself in these last few weeks. What do you think people did before the controversial and still experimental use of vit K was initiated? The risk of Hemorrhagic Disease is miniscule. Vit K shot or oral is what is causing the high incendence of jaundice these days. http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/vitktop.html As far as cutting the umbilical cord, even waiting 5 minutes after birth is beneficial. But cutting the cord sometime before the placenta is expelled, is the norm. Your midwife must have a reason for picking 4 hours. In the Lotus procedure, placenta's can be left connected for up to 6 days to separate on its own, which sounds to me, rather extreme, but..... There is also a procedure to burn/cauterize the cord, instead of cutting it, but I dont know much about that. Best of Luck to you all. Guest guest
We left the cord attached until all blood was gone from it. From the time the placenta was birthed to cutting of the cord was about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Makes for a clean cut, too, because there is no blood left in the cord to worry about. I did not bother with Vit K (or anything else) for either birth.

Guest guest
Also for us - the cord was done in an hour or two - the lotus birth sounds interesting, but a trouble to deal with when you want to be snuggling with your new baby - - - my two cents. Guest guest
Hullo Lolita. LOL, not that amount of time to expell the placenta. but to cut the cord. The lotus procedure can leave the baby connected to the placenta for up to 6 days, to separate on its own. I cant imagine that, but.... Sorry for any confusion.
