Russia's schizophrenics suffer from lack of medication: official

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russia's half-million schizophrenics suffer from a severe

shortage of medication, a senior psychiatric official told a scientific

conference in Moscow.

Some 80 percent of the country's more than 500,000 schizophrenics are in

hospital but only 40 percent of their medication needs are met, Tatyana

Dmitryeva, head of the Serbsky Institute, said as quoted by the RIA-Novosti

news agency.

Russian medical officials need to adopt new approaches to the condition, she

said.

" It is possible now to cure the illness in its early stages and restore the

sufferer to his previous social abilities and to his work, " Dmitryeva said.

However Russia spends on each of its schizophrenics only one-tenth of what

Britain spends on treating a schizophrenic and one-twentieth of the sum

spent in the United States, the head of the Federal Medication Therapy

Centre, Sergei Mosolov, said, also quoted by RIA-Novosti.
