Guest guest
I've flown with my children on Southwest many times and have never been asked to produce ANY documents for them, vaccine record, birth record, nothing. I'd call and ask to speak to a supervisor about the matter. I don't beleive they can legally refuse to let your child fly because of his vax status, especially if you're staying in the states (does Southwest even fly internationally? I don't think the do.). Guest guest
I flew with my son once when he was about a year and it was on Southwest. I didnt bring his birth certificate and they were like well since there so little they dont obviously have a photo ID so they need a birth certificate or shot record because the shot record, according to them, is as good as a birth certificate. I at first forgot I had it then I went OH wait I do have this little business card size shot record card is this what you accept? She was like yes thats it I said you mean to tell me this card that has NO OFFICIAL seal is as good as a birth certificate? She was like yeah that will work or I would have to pay for his seat because they cant prove he's not over 3 and needs to pay for a seat. Its all stupid really just so they can get money out of you. If they do make you pay for a seat you can get the money back with a birth certificate shown after the fact BUT a birth certificate is better than a shot record in my opinion. Guest guest
This is very strange. I've flown at least once a year with my kids across the country, usually on Southwest, and never been asked for a shot record. We've brought birth certificates just to prove they are under 2, but have never been asked for anything else. There must be more to this story. Guest guest
Heidi, it's NOT the airlines trying to get money from you, it's not anybody. I've heard that from passengers time & time again & it's sickening to hear somebody think that way. As a ticket agent & gate agent for Continental Airlines, I can tell you a rule exists for each passenger to have positive photo identification, except in the case of a child who may not need one, i.e. an infant. The airline needs a birth certificate to prove that the child is yours & to satisfy TSA requirements also. If the ticket agent doesn't check the birth certificate & TSA requests it, well then you're in a pickle aren't you? It's shameful to think that anything an airline representative tells you is only to satisfy their requirements; there are many other entities that airlines answer to, TSA, airport authorities, etc. While we may not ask for the birth certificate each & every time, you certainly wouldn't want to be caught w/o it, would you? We (airline airport agents) NEVER question a parent if their child appears to be older than age 2, not 3 as you wrote, only to charge for a seat. It's not hospitable to the passenger, it's inconvenient for us & you, & it's just not necessary. Granted I'm answering not for Southwest Airlines but for Continental, the rules don't change. The individual you spoke to may have been mistaken, as several have mentioned. Regards, E. Tomlinson
Guest guest
that's crazy. i've flown with my daughter many times (several different airlines) since she was 9 months and i was never asked anything at all, which is good b/c i never thought to bring any " id " for her! were they asking for shot records just for id? or do they really want to know vax status? > On Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 8:29 PM, Heidi Bussey <trtleduv96@...> wrote: > > I flew with my son once when he was about a year and it was on Southwest. Guest guest
thanks for sharing that . Where are you a gate agent - I fly Continental some. And I book many of my tour clients on Continental - you have so many good connections to so many places I bring tours to. In fact I'm on Continentals webpage right now booking 3 women from Denver to Ireland for my Ireland tour ;-) Sheri At 09:28 PM 2/24/2009, you wrote: >Heidi, it's NOT the airlines trying to get money from you, it's not >anybody. Guest guest
I'm really surprised this post has not generated more responses. If you think about it it's quite scary. What right does an airlines have to ask about anyones vaccine status, or require a form from an MD. Guest guest
Interesting - I would use birth certificate and your own photo ID instead. I would not want to contribute to the routine use of vaccine records, as that acceptance would help such records to become a more widely accepted policy. It's insidious how things can be blandly accepted by people to the point where suddenly they've lost rights they didn't exercise or know they had. t On Feb 27, 2009, at 1:11 PM, Peggy Rose wrote: > I just posted this scenario on another group and was told that > airlines will ask for imuunization records, or birth certificates as > proof the child does infact belong to the parent. > > Peggy > > > > > > > > A friend of mine just sent me this message: > > > > > > FYI: Southwest airlines told me that they require Wyatt's > > > immunization records in order for him to fly. Guest guest
Whoa Whoa Whoa. There is no airline policy that requires proof of vaccines for children or anyone else to fly. Some *reserve the right* to ask for identification, given the horrible incident of kidnappings and such, to prove the child is yours, or of the age you have said they are, esp. for lap age passengers not buying a seat. IF they do, you can provide such proof by Birth Certificate, vaccine records, baptism record, SS card, etc, as children do not have driver's licenses, of course, or other adult forms of ID. They do not routinely request these, to the best of my knowledge. JetBlue has a stricter policy, but even they seldom request them. THEY ARE NOT screening passengers or children for proof of vaccinations!!! My daughter and her unvaccinated 13 mo. old son flew out yesterday morning via Frontier, from Chicago to Denver with no such request, and no problems.
