As usual, Good Ol' Doc s is right-on! ...phil/qd36

New flu vaccine is a work in progress

If you don't mind being a lab rat for Big Pharma, then go ahead... get

the latest flu vaccine. Once again, the feds have rushed a flu vaccine,

called Fluzone High-Dose, through the approval process, leaving you to

discover any side effects on your own.

But don't worry... they've asked its maker to continue researching it

in the meantime. Don't you feel better now?

This fits right in with the FDA's motto: "approve first, ask questions

later." Unfortunately, "later" is often after you've suffered from side

effects like pain, redness, swelling, headaches, muscle aches, and

fever. And those are just the known side effects of this under-tested

drug.

At best, the FDA will pull the drug from the market with an

unceremonious "oops"--and that'll be the end of it. For them, anyway.

You, on the other hand, could be suffering from the side effects for

the rest of your life.

We already know that the side effects from Fluzone High- Dose are

popping up more frequently than with the common flu shot. And you know

darn well that because this drug is aimed at seniors, any more serious

side effects that pop up will be blamed on the patients' ages rather

than the bad medicine they've been given.

The worst part of all is that everyone is convinced that the potential

risk is worth the benefit. Not hardly...

If you want to know the truth about flu shots, all you need to do is

look at what happens when the vaccines fail. And here's what happens:

Nothing.

It's easy to sort science from scare tactics on this one... because

every now and then the flu vaccine doesn't match the strain of the flu

that ultimately breaks out. And when that happens, there are no

noticeable surges in deaths from the flu or its complications.

As recently as 2004, there were severe shortages in flu shot

production, and vaccination rates fell by nearly half. Remember all

those widespread flu deaths? Of course you don't--because they didn't

happen!

Back in 1989, just 15 percent of seniors received flu vaccines. Now,

more than 65 percent are tricked into rolling up their sleeves. Yet

flu-related fatalities aren't dropping any. By some measures, they've

even risen a bit.

The flu shot is hokum, plain and simple--a desperate attempt to sell

you more meds you don't need.

That's not the only Big Pharma foolery going on this week. Keep reading

for the latest painkiller push...

There's a pill for everything these days.

Want to quit smoking? Take this pill.

Having trouble shedding those extra pounds? Take that pill.

Suffering from a broken heart? Well, as it turns out, there's a pill

for that, too.

Two new studies found that acetaminophen--the main ingredient in

Tylenol--could help decrease heartache, hurt feelings, rejection and

other forms of social pain.

Is this really what it's come to?

Broken hearts are a part of life. You hurt, and then you move on. End

of story.

But somehow we've turned into a nation of pill-popping pansies who

can't take a little pain now and then — even the kind that's good for

us. After all, these experience are how we learn and grow.

But if the only thing we learn is that a pill can solve all of our

problems, then the only thing that grows is a Big Pharma bank account.

Acetaminophen isn't some safe, happy pill no matter how readily

available it is. It's the leading cause of acute liver failure in the

United States. In 2005, acetaminophen overdoses sent 106,000 adults and

25,000 kids to emergency rooms, leading to 73,000 hospitalizations and

hundreds of deaths, according to the American Association for the Study

of Liver Disease.

And those are conservative numbers.

Other side effects include abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, the

sweats, convulsions and even coma. Kidney failure and heart problems

are also possible.

Still feel like popping an extra Tylenol to chase away the blues?

I'm not saying you should flush it all right now--you shouldn't dispose

of meds that way in any case--but if you're going to take a painkiller

like acetaminophen, do so only at the lowest dose and only for REAL

pain.

Sorry, but heartache doesn't count.

In pain over bad research,

s II, M.D.
