B Informed Now! In Los Angeles

On Saturday June 26, the Hepatitis B Foundation will host its second patient

conference on hepatitis B and liver cancer at the Asian Pacific Liver Center at

St. Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. The Keynote speaker is Dr. Emmet

Keeffe and all of the presentations will be translated into Chinese and Korean.

The free conference is scheduled 9:00 am-1:00 pm and registration is requested.

World Hepatitis Day Rally Attracts Hundreds

Almost 500 people traveled across the country for the first World Hepatitis Day

rally held on May 19 at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. The rally was

organized by the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, in partnership with the

Hepatitis B Foundation and other member organizations. Amidst multiple chants,

speakers-- which included Congressmen Mike Honda, Dent and Bill

Cassidy-- fired up the crowd along with patients who introduced themselves as “I

am the face of hepatitis.” The bottom line: we CANNOT be silent anymore! Too

HBV Prevalence in Puerto Rico: An Underestimated Disparity?

A prevalence rate of 3.1% was found in a sample of 1,654 adults in Puerto Rico

with 98.3% of participants unaware of their HBV infection. Improved education

and surveillance are necessary to reduce the burden of HBV in Puerto Rico, as

well as among Puerto Rican immigrant communities in the U.S. Read more in BMC

Poor Pregnancy Outcomes

Linked to Chronic Hepatitis

Researchers in Israel followed 749 women with chronic HBV or HCV infection who

gave birth from 1988-2007. Compared to uninfected women, HBV or HCV-infected

women had significantly higher rates of negative outcomes such as low birth

weight babies, congenital malformations and perinatal mortality. Thus, careful

monitoring of pregnant women with chronic hepatitis infections is warranted.

CDC Report on Hepatitis and Liver Cancer

May 2010 marked the 15th Anniversary of Hepatitis Awareness Month in the U.S.

The CDC has added liver cancer to this year's report because it is rising

significantly in Asian, Pacific Islander and Hispanic populations, among others.
