Guest guest
Dear - prednisone acts on metabolism and pituitary more than anything else. I would caution you against taking 5mg immediately. Your body makes 5mg cortisol naturally, and if you start taking 5mg, your adrenal gland that produces cortisol may leave you dependant. Prednisone can have a negative effect on bones but that is at high doses. I have been on prednisone for 12 years and cant say enough about its benefits. I take 6mg am along with plaquenil 200mg and ibuprofen 800. At night I take 1mg prednisone and the same of plaquenil and ibuprofen. I would start off with 1 or two milligrams only for a week, add another milligram the next week until you are up to five. I would also split the dose (bid) taking 3 or 4mg in the AM when you need your pain management the most and 1mg at night. My doctor started me on a medrol pack in the beginning and had severe effects from it. Go slowly and increase once every week. Ask your doctor to give you 1mg pills not 5. You should have blood work done which I suspect you do on a consistent basis which must include your kidney function. Go to www.google.com and read up on this drug yourself. Good luck. Deborah. RA since 1994.
