Guest guest
Ascitic fluid is much more than " water " . The content of the fluid can be examined to determine whether or not it is a transudate, or an exudate. (the liver is where blood cell destruction takes place) With ascites due to inflammation there is often edema in other areas of the body..such as the legs and breasts. When it is a result of portal vein pressure issues...that occur with cirrhosis, there will be weight loss elsewhere in the body, but great abdominal distention. Followed by fatigue and mental sluggishness. Either way, it is something your specialist will be able to determine. And management of it will decided. My father in law died from liver cancer. There was never a time when we did NOT know what the abdominal distention was from. Depending on what the fluid is primarily made up of, there are steps to take in order to reduce or eliminate it.
