Guest guest
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/30/opinion/l30troops.html Published: December 30, 2004 To the Editor: Re " A Flood of Troubled Soldiers Is in the Offing, Experts Predict " (front page, Dec. 16): Once again, the alarming psychiatric casualty rate threatens to overwhelm existing mental health resources. This problem spurred the development and use of group treatment during and after World War II and Vietnam. One clinician helps many soldiers simultaneously. Group treatment offers soldiers a safe and supportive environment to understand their own reactions, normalize them with others who have shared the experience, find relief from isolation and shame, and begin the recovery process. Group psychotherapy has a well-documented history of helping veterans and active personnel and the systems that support them. It should be a treatment of choice for those who need it now. H.
