" Two-third to three-fourth of kids that have been diagnosed with ADHD just had sleep disorder, " Kearns said. http://www.torringtontelegram.com/main.php?story_id=2106 & page=23 You too may have a sleep disorder BY KIM NOTEBOOM, STAFF WRITER Sleep is an integral part of making a person's life well balanced, but without it, people will begin to show a variety of symptoms that they may otherwise never occur. There are over 60 kinds of sleep disorders that affect 70 million Americans daily, said Mark Schultz at Diagnostic Sleep Solutions, LLC out of sbluff, Neb., during a Sleep Disorder Clinic held at Community Hospital on Tuesday evening. " Twenty percent of the general population suffers from sleep disorder, " he said. Four out of every 100 middle-aged men suffer and two out of every 100 middle-aged women suffer from different sleep disorders, he added. The symptoms that are commonly associated with sleep disorders are loud snoring, problem sleepiness, excessive daytime fatigue, night sweats, irritability, personality changes, morning headaches, obesity, poor concentration and memory lapses. Shultz said that it takes a strong person to function every day when they have a sleep disorder, " I have yet to meet someone with a sleep disorder who isn't strong-willed. " Schultz covered only three disorders at the meeting, which were periodic limb movement, restless leg and obstructive sleep apnea. There are two kinds of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. The more common one of the two is obstructive sleep apnea. " This is a common disorder in which the airway becomes closed or partially closed while sleeping, " Schultz said. The common symptoms for obstructive sleep apnea are snoring accompanied by pauses in breathing, gasping for air during sleep, daytime fatigue, and morning headaches, which are caused by blood oxygen levels dropping at night. The important thing to remember is " not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, " Schultz said. " You're not going to know if you have this, " said Mike Kearns a registered polysomnographic technologist at Diagnostic Sleep Solutions, LLC. " That is why you have to depend on your sleep partners. " Periodic Limb Movement and Restless Leg are two similar sleep disorders. Their symptoms include daytime fatigue, morning muscle cramps or " Charlie horses " , depression, weight gain. According to Schultz there are four stages of sleep. Most people will rapidly enter stages one and two but Periodic Leg Movement will keep people from entering stages three and four. By the time people with sleep apnea reach stage three and four, their airway closes off and their brain waves begin to flutter, which will send the sleeper back into stages one and two. This can happen 10 times an hour. " A person doesn't get rest until they're in stages three or four, " Kearns said. Research has begun to link sleep disorders with other medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, weight gain, and decreased attention span in kids according to Schultz. Researchers are now finding out that kids, who have been put on Ritalin for being overactive, really just need sleep or have a sleeping disorder, he continued. " Two-third to three-fourth of kids that have been diagnosed with ADHD just had sleep disorder, " Kearns said. Schultz said that anyone who thinks they might have a sleep disorder should visit with their physician and he might suggest a sleep study or surgery. A sleep study is more like spending the night in a hotel. Patients check in around 8 p.m. and stay until the following morning. The sleep study consists of a noninvasive test called a polsomnogram that records a variety of body functions during the patients sleep. Surgery for sleep apnea is only about 50 percent effective, but Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Therapy is a more effective solution to sleep apnea. Periodic Leg Movement can be treated with medication. There are solutions for sleep disorders and a sleep study is recommended so that people can overcome this problem. With the study " Nothing hurts, " Kearns said. " It is a very relaxing night and is the easiest test you'll ever take. "
