Additional 2,000 Patients At Risk for Hepatitis C

By Griffith @ September 20, 2010

Even more patients are being connected to a Hepatitis C scare at the Mayo

Clinic.

They triple checked their roster of patients who may have come in contact with

needles used by a former employee.

" And all together we've decided that we need to send out about 2,000 more

letters. Just to be absolutely certain that we've captured everybody that might

be at risk, " says Dr. Rupp, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida.

Which means, as many as 5,000 patients are at risk of having Hepatitis C. Rupp

says the latest group are patients who may have come in contact with former

employee, Beumel, at St. Luke's Hospital between 2004 and 2008. Beumel

admitted to drugging himself with hospital syringes that were used again on

patients. Three people that we know of were infected, one died as a result of

the blood disease.

Rupp says letters are being sent out immediately to warn and test those patients

for free.
