" Mark Harvey of Hugh Solicitors in Cardiff has collated a

database of 3,250 Irish and British plaintiffs.......... "

A law firm coordinating personal injury claims by Irish users of the

anti-depressant drug, Seroxat, last week won British state funding

for group action lawsuits. The drug is manufactured by

pharmaceutical giant GlaxoKline in Co Cork.

Mark Harvey of Hugh Solicitors in Cardiff has collated a

database of 3,250 Irish and British plaintiffs. Harvey, who is the

secretary of the Association of Personal Injur y Law yers (APIL) in

Britain, has previously passed on details of Irish claimants to

Dublin lawyers.

" We have been working on the case because we have had some legal

expense insurance from claimants, " he said. " Some

of the clients have paid for themselves. The final brick in the wall

is the public funding to get on with the case. "

The group lawsuit will claim that users suffered severe withdrawal

symptoms after using the popular drug.

Harvey said he would be writing to GlaxoKline soon to set down

the claim in detail and to request data that the company used when

it first developed Seroxat.

Recent statements by Britain's Medical and Healthcare products

Regulatory Agency (MHRA) will help claimants pursuing law cases in

other jurisdictions, according to the law firm.

The Irish Medicines Board last year said that, following a request

from Glaxo, it had altered the wording on the patient information

leaflet for Seroxat. A Glaxo Ireland spokesman said that the company

was not aware of any active lawsuits in Ireland and that any claims

against it were confined to Britain.
