Guest guest
Snick, Yes, my orthotics do help greatly. However, mine are custom made, as what is on TV or sold in stores would not be made foot-specific for me. Apparently I have mild CMT, so I am told, whatever that means. I guess Stage 1 CMT, for my whole life it seems. If you want to read about the 7 Stages of CMT (feet) and 4 for Hands, I do recommend Dr. Vinci's book. Not only words, but has photos and graphs too. Why do my orthotics work for me and how do they work? They are each individually designed for each foot, as each of my feet are different and have different needs. Higher, lower, more/less support, in different places. They help stabilize my foot to a heel-toe gait - for me this is a good thing, as by nature I am a toe walker. By having my feet stabilized, I also have much better balance and don't fall or trip. Of course they work only if I wear them which I do. They are easily inserted into different shoes also so I am not stuck with 1 pair of shoes, although I prefer one. The orthotics also help minimize foot shock/hitting the concrete/street/floor, etc, which minimizes the rest of the body having to work so hard. The orthotics are also good for my calf muscles, in that they let the muscles naturally work. A very simple solution, really. Initial cost was $300, 80% covered by insurance. Once a year or if I need to before then, I return to my orthotist for a 'wear check' and any updating if needed. Again, it is all very simple, but rather than order something off the T.V. that is not made for you, I suggest you meet with a certified orthotist. There is a link for orthotists in our bookmarks and a link for the Italian CMT book so you can read about CMT 'stages'. ~ Gretchen
