Guest guest
Fiona, Thank you for caring so much about the person in your life afflicted with CMT. I have CMT, and I don't know what I would do without my husband's and childrens' support. Regarding diet, I'm certainly no expert, all I can share with you is what I've learned from my internist on this subject. He suggests eating a lot of protein (lean cuts of meat, etc.) for prolonging muscle strength and taking a supplement of Vitamin C for cartilidge and tissue development. This is especially important if Ross is doing any type of strength training or exercise. Also, my personal experience has taught me to keep my weight down by making good food choices and exercising within reason. I've found that the less body weight I have to carry around, the more my mobility improves. To prove my point, next time you're getting groceries have Ross pick up a 10 lb. bag of flour and tote it around the store for 5 minutes. The increased stress on the muscles is amazing. The difference is noticeable even for " healthy " people, so you could imagine the difference it would make for people with CMT. (I'm not implying that Ross is overweight, I'm just giving you an example). I also take a multi-vitamin everyday. Hope this " food for thought " is helpful.
