Guest guest
, You are absolutely right--vitamins, supplements, and herbs are processed through a major organ in our body. Regardless of what Patty says, this is scientifically documented in any medical/nursing textbook, and this has been known for yrs and yrs. Anything that is put through the body has to be broken down and absorbed somehow. These items are not just miraculously absorbed, they have to be broken down and utilized by the body in smaller elements. And as far as herbs being toxic to the liver, again, you are right. My acupuncturist is a woman who has her degree in acupuncture, holistic medicine and teaches at the Denver School of Acupuncture (actually she recently moved back to her hometown of Quebec, Canada). When she was treating me, she wanted me to try herbs as she said that they would " free up " the congestion in my liver, kidneys, and stomach. However, she was very careful about what she prescribed for me as she told me that herbs can be VERY toxic and dangerous to the liver, especially when certain disease conditions are present. She was very specific about the dosages and warned me about certain side effects and that if any of these side effects occurred, that I needed to let her know and she would either need to adjust the dosage or stop them altogether. She also stressed that herbs must be monitored very closely by someone knowledgeable about them, and that no one should ever take herbs by themselves without some supervision. e > I read that some herbs can be as toxic to the liver as drugs, I don't > know if this includes any supplements and I certainly don't claim to > be any kind of expert in these issues.
