Hepatitis B & The Role of Diet

Friday, 04 Feb 2011

There is no specific healthy diet for Hepatitis B. If living with Hepatitis B,

it's important to pay special attention to diet. The best option is to eat a

low-cholesterol, low-fat, and high-fiber diet. Here is a nutritional diet that

can help protect the liver:

Limiting alcohol and caffeine consumption

Avoid drinking any form of alcoholic beverages, as drinking alcohol can only

worsen the liver condition. It is also advised to avoid caffeine drinks as both

alcohol and caffeine can cause dehydration.

Staying hydrated.

It is advisable to drink at least eight to 10 glasses of cold water regularly.

Liquid foods like tomato and chicken noodle soups are also good.

Drinking green tea.

It is believed that including green tea in a diet for Hepatitis B can get rid of

the virus as it contains an antioxidant called Catechin. Despite containing some

caffeine, green tea is rich in antioxidants.

Avoiding high doses of Vitamins (unless prescribed)

A balanced diet should contain all essential vitamins and minerals. However, it

is best to avoid taking high dose vitamin supplements, especially those

containing vitamin A or vitamin D or even Iron, which are harmful to the liver.

Including Vitamin E in diet

Vitamin E helps protect the liver from damage, and studies suggest that vitamin

E and its supplements also helps fight off the virus in the liver.

Avoiding processed foods

Processed foods contain chemical additives and it is advised that people with

Hepatitis B reduce their consumption of frozen or canned foods.

Avoiding preserved, cured, and fatty foods

It is also advisable to reduce intake of preserved, smoked, cured, and salted

foods and to minimize the amount of deep fried and fatty foods in the diet.

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables

Eat plenty of fresh organic fruits and vegetables that contain little pesticides

and fertilizers.

Avoid eating raw shellfish

Avoid raw or undercooked shellfish such as oysters and clams, because they may

contain infectious organisms or toxins.

These are some of the important steps that can be taken into account to keep the

undamaged cells as healthy as possible. It is therefore important to maintain a

nutritious diet for Hepatitis B to maintain proper weight and energy levels.
