The hard outer part of the bone is made up of proteins and a substance called hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite stores most of the body's calcium and is primarily responsible for the strength of bones. Marrow is located in the center of each bone. Blood cells are manufactured within the marrow. Bones come together to form joints. Joints are responsible for the degree and direction of motion. Muscles are comprised of bundles of fibers and are responsible for posture and movement. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones and are arranged in opposing groups surrounding the joints. Tendons and ligaments are two types of tissue. Both of these tissues strengthen and support joints, facilitating movement. Joints make possible the degree and direction of motion. Joints also provide stability and help to prevent damage to bones from constant use. Muscles are comprised of bundles of fibers and assist with posture and movement. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones and are arranged in opposing groups surrounding the joints. Several disorders are associated with joints and muscles. Some of these disorders include, but are not limited to, arthritis, hip degeneration, and fibromyalgia. Kidney & Urinary Tract Disorders Healthy humans have two kidneys, although only one is necessary. The kidneys' primary function is to rid the body of waste products, excess water, and sodium in the blood. The kidneys drain urine into the bladder, which expands as it accumulates, sending nerve signals to the brain indicating the need to urinate. Many illnesses can result from a problem with the body's kidney and urinary tract system. Liver & Gallbladder Disorders The liver and gallbladder are connected, yet they perform different functions. The liver is responsible for monitoring and regulating chemical levels in the body; producing blood-clotting chemicals; manufacturing cholesterol; and converting digested substances into carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The liver also breaks down harmful substances created in other parts of the body or absorbed by the intestine, and turns them into a harmless chemical called bile. The gallbladder's only function is storing bile. The chemicals broken down in bile are absorbed by the intestine and excreted from the body in feces. The use of some prescription and over-the-counter drugs has been shown to impair the liver's ability to perform. While responsible for over 500 bodily functions, two of its most important roles include the production of Bile (which digests fat) and glucose storage. The liver also helps the body process and eliminate toxic substances such as alcohol and drugs. While the liver is unique in that it can regenerate itself if partially damaged, prolonged abuse or severe damage can doom the ability of the liver to perform its life sustaining role. The use of some prescription drugs has been shown to impair the liver's ability to perform.
